The Village Code Vision

In an increasingly Tech centric world Village code aims to bridge the rapidly expanding digital divide.Through workshops, camps and after school programs Village Code is empowering youths in Western Kenya with skills covering programming, design, entrepreneurship and so much more. Through collaborative, youth-centered fun learning Village Code is transforming youth in Western Kenya from Spectators to Participants in the digital economy.

    Introduction to Scratch

    Scratch is a programming language, created by MIT, that makes it easy to create interactive art, stories, simulations and games. It can be found here: https://scratch.mit.edu Scratch allows children to learn coding concepts and create interactive projects without needing to learn a text-based programming language. This means they won’t be slowed down by their keyboard skills or the ability to remember complex code.

    Brainstorming App Ideas

    Kids are put in groups then they generate creative ideas that they would love to create solutions for.This is usually an intensive and freewheeling group discussion .Analysis, discussion, or criticism of the aired ideas is allowed only when the brainstorming session is over and evaluation session begins.They then use scratch to provide solutions to the problems they have identified.

    Mobile App Development Using MIT App Inventor

    MIT App Inventor is an innovative beginner's introduction to programming and app creation that transforms the complex language of text-based coding into visual, drag-and-drop building blocks. The simple graphical interface grants even an inexperienced novice the ability to create a basic, fully functional app within an hour or less.

    Technovation Training
    Every Sunday afternoon(January-March 2017)

    Technovation offers girls around the world the opportunity to learn the necessary skills to become tech entrepreneurs and leaders.50 girls in Kisumu from 2 high schools and 2 secondary schools will take part in the 12 weeks challenge.

    Girls ages 12 to 18 learn to identify a problem in their community and create a mobile app solution to address that problem, and then learn how to communicate these ideas and translate them into a fully launched business.The girls will are paired up with coaches that will assist them throughout the programme
